Total non-expert. But from that perspective it looks to me like Rootclaim's explanation for why they lost likely encapsulates why they lost. All they can think of is why the judges failed or why their rhetoric wasn't sufficiently dumbed-down for the judges. Never does it occur to them that their argument was weaker. An inability to integrate that possibility is probably exactly why they lost. They thought an inferior argument was, if course, superior.
