Comment by Riley Testut

Independent iOS developer; AltStore creator.
In practice though, the current App Store situation has some significant problems which are getting harder and harder to ignore — several of which Congress’ antitrust report explicitly call out, such as requiring developers to implement in-app purchases or risk being thrown out of the App Store. [...] So to celebrate AltStore’s first birthday, I decided to finally write up my thoughts on the App Store — including why I went through all this effort in the first place and why I believe sideloading is ultimately the right long-term solution for iOS. I know my opinions won’t be shared by everyone, but hopefully my perspective will at least shine some light on the real value sideloading adds today to the platform, not just in a hypothetical future.

AI Verified The quote is authentic. The official Riley Testut blog post at the cited URL, titled "Thoughts on the App Store" and dated October 14, 2020, contains the first sentence verbatim, then one intervening sentence, then the second passage verbatim. The [...] omission faithfully skips that middle sentence, and the post is published on Riley Testut’s personal site, so the attribution to Riley Testut in 2020 is correct. AI Unverifiable Source URL (rileytestut.com 'Thoughts on the App Store', 14 Oct 2020) returns HTTP 403 from WebFetch. Web search across multiple outlets confirms the post exists with the quoted content: written for AltStore's first birthday, citing Congress's antitrust report flagging issues like forced in-app purchases, and arguing sideloading is the right long-term solution for iOS. Vote (For 'Grant developers the right to interoperate with large platforms without permission') aligns with Testut's pro-sideloading position. Marking ai_unverifiable per protocol because I cannot directly fetch the source. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-7 · 1mo ago
