Comment by Max Tegmark

I actually do not think it's a foregone conclusion that we will build AGI [artificial general intelligence] machines that can outsmart us all. Not because we can't … but rather we might just not want to. So why are obsessing about trying to build some kind of digital god that's going to replace us, if we instead can build all these super powerful AI tools that augment us and empower us?

AI Verified The quote explicitly discusses whether to "build AGI" and argues we "might just not want to," contrasting it with building AI tools that augment humans instead. That is directly about the full statement. · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 18d ago

AI Verified The quote argues we "might just not want to" build AGI and asks "why are [we] obsessing about trying to build some kind of digital god," instead preferring AI tools that "augment us and empower us," which clearly opposes building AGI. · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 18d ago

AI Verified Axios’s Jan. 22, 2025 article contains both passages verbatim and attributes them to Max Tegmark—the first as “Tegmark said” and the second as “Tegmark asked”—so the quote is authentic and correctly sourced. AI Unverifiable Quote attributed to Max Tegmark from Davos 2025 (January 22, 2025), reported in Axios. WebFetch on axios.com source URL returned HTTP 403. Web search confirms verbatim wording: "I actually do not think it's a foregone conclusion that we will build AGI machines that can outsmart us all. Not because we can't… but rather we might just not want to" and "why are obsessing about trying to build some kind of digital god that's going to replace us, if we instead can build all these super powerful AI tools that augment us and empower us?" The Axios article title "It's not a 'foregone conclusion' that AI will outsmart humans, expert says" matches the source URL. Vote "against" "Build artificial general intelligence" perfectly aligns with Tegmark's pro-tool-AI / anti-AGI position. Marking ai_unverifiable due to source URL blocking. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-7 · 1mo ago
