Member of European Parliament (Spain)
Madam President, Commissioner Virkkunen, the Digital Agenda for Europe, the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act were approved by this European Parliament not only to subject digital services and major technology platforms to Union law; not only to affirm the regulatory effect we call digital sovereignty—the so-called “Brussels effect”—but also to protect the fundamental rights of the Charter, citizenship and democracy.
The European model of democracy cannot, in any way, kneel before the business model of those major technology platforms and their addictive algorithms.
Therefore, Commissioner: firmness. No concessions to the pressure of those technology companies and of Trump, who shields them, because this is absolutely about defending that model without any concession whatsoever, under the pretext of flexibility or simplification, toward dissolving or degrading the standard set by this European Parliament in the last legislature.
