Reddit commenter on Bayesian updating and priors
Bayes doesn’t shift the priors as fast as it should, I grant you. If a supplier tells you that a crate of 10,000 balls is 90% black and 10% white and you can’t sample the crate but only a sample of 10, my workings out is if the sample is 10 white balls your posterior should drop to 81%. That’s clearly not as significant as it needs to be.AI Verified (Jul 22, 2025)

Relevant: on a page about the lab-leak vs. zoonosis COVID-origins debate, the quote directly criticizes Bayesian reasoning as insufficiently responsive to evidence ("doesn’t shift the priors as fast as it should"), so it provides a clear enough signal about whether Bayesian analysis is the right framework for settling that question. The author is criticizing Bayesian reasoning itself: “Bayes doesn’t shift the priors as fast as it should” and using Bayes here “would be a mistake.” In this COVID-origins debate thread, that strongly implies they do not see Bayesian analysis as the right framework for settling the question.
