Comment by Philippe Lemey

Evolutionary and computational virologist at KU Leuven and coauthor of SARS-CoV-2 origins studies
Using spatial analyses we show that the earliest known COVID-19 cases diagnosed in December 2019 were geographically distributed near to, and centered on, this market. This distribution cannot be explained by high densities of elderly people at greater risk of symptomatic COVID-19.

Disputed The quoted text is real: it appears verbatim in the abstract reproduced for the Zenodo preprint The Huanan market was the epicenter of SARS-CoV-2 emergence. But Zenodo’s record for DOI 10.5281/zenodo.6299116 shows this was a multi-author preprint published on 2022-02-26 with 18 listed authors, including Philippe Lemey, not a statement attributed to Lemey alone. Because this platform cannot verify a multi-author paper as a single-author Philippe Lemey quote, the attribution is disputed.
