Comment by Lorena M. Malpica Serrano
Evolutionary biology researcher and coauthor of the Science paper on the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market as the early epicenter of COVID-19
We show here that the earliest known COVID-19 cases from December 2019, including those without reported direct links, were geographically centered on this market. We report that live SARS-CoV-2-susceptible mammals were sold at the market in late 2019 and that within the market, SARS-CoV-2-positive environmental samples were spatially associated with vendors selling live mammals.Disputed (Aug 26, 2022)

Verbatim in the Science paper dated 2022-08-26, but this is the wording of a multi-author paper, not a single-author quote by Lorena M. Malpica Serrano alone.

Quote appears in the cited Science paper abstract, but that source is a multi-author paper beginning Michael Worobey, Joshua I. Levy, and Lorena Malpica Serrano, so it is not verifiable as a single-author Lorena M. Malpica Serrano quote.

The quote appears verbatim in the University of Edinburgh Research Explorer abstract for the Science article, and that page lists Lorena M. Malpica Serrano among the 17 authors; however, the source is a multi-author paper, so a single-author attribution to Lorena M. Malpica Serrano cannot be verified as the canonical quote author. The page also shows the publication date as 2022-08-26. ([research.ed.ac.uk](https://www.research.ed.ac.uk/en/publications/the-huanan-seafood-wholesale-market-in-wuhan-was-the-early-epicen/))
