Observational research, which describes much of epidemiology, may be most revealing when considered in the context of what experimental research suggests. To assess whether an association discovered in an epidemiological study is real and not the result of bias or confounding factors, researchers may conduct experimental research, such as a randomized clinical trial, to confirm a suspected cause-and-effect relationship.
