Comment by Thom Hartmann

If conservatives really want to do away with “wasteful” and “overly bureaucratic” social services in the U.S. - services like Medicaid, Social Security and foodstamps - there’s an easy alternative. It’s simple. It encourages personal responsibility. And it will do away with our current mess of programs that make up our social safety net. All we have to do is guarantee every person a universal, and unconditional, minimum income. AI Verified source (2015)

Verification History

AI Verified Verified by fetching the source URL (thomhartmann.com/blog/2015/07/...) which contains the exact quote. Also confirmed via web search that the article appeared on multiple outlets (OpEdNews, Truthout). Author attribution is correct — Thom Hartmann is a known UBI advocate. Vote alignment is correct: the quote argues in favor of UBI and the vote on "Implement a universal basic income" (statement 224) is "for". Year was missing; set to 2015 based on the article publication date (July 2015). Searched for a more recent (2025-2026) Hartmann quote on UBI but did not find a specific, quotable one — his most recent UBI article found was from October 2023. Keeping the 2015 quote as it is a clear, well-sourced statement of his position. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-6 · 17d ago
