But introducing a citizen’s wage when our Welfare State is so underdeveloped is to start building the house from the roof down. We must ensure that every citizen and resident has the resources needed to live a dignified life, and that means the state must guarantee that citizens and residents can reach that level of income, whether through work or through other sources, including public transfers, to which they are entitled because of their circumstances. And that income should be higher than what is often referred to as a basic income, which in Spain resembles an anti-poverty assistance benefit more than a universal right.
