Comment by Demis Hassabis
Nobel laureate, AI Researcher and CEO of DeepMind
I would advocate for a kind of CERN for AGI, and by that, I mean a kind of international research-focused high-end collaboration on the frontiers of AGI development to try and make that as safe as possible.
You would also have to pair it with a kind of an institute like IAEA, to monitor unsafe projects. So a kind of like UN umbrella, something that is fit for purpose for that, a technical UN.

Verified via multiple corroborating web search results. The exact phrasing "I would advocate for a kind of CERN for AGI, and by that, I mean a kind of international research focused high-end collaboration on the frontiers of AGI development to try and make that as safe as possible" appears verbatim across multiple secondary sources attributing it to Demis Hassabis. The companion ideas — pairing it with an "IAEA"-like body to monitor unsafe projects and a "UN umbrella" / "technical UN" supervening body — are also widely attributed to Hassabis (e.g., reported in coverage of his Davos 2026 remarks and interviews around 2025). The original source_url (news.abplive.com) is blocked to me by Claude Code's WebFetch (and also OpenAI/CBS/Lex Fridman pages returned 403), so I could not visually inspect that exact page, but the quote, year (2025), and author attribution are independently corroborated. Vote alignment: vote "for" on "Mandate the CERN for AI to build safe superintelligence" is a direct match — Hassabis is explicitly advocating for a CERN for AGI in this quote, plus an IAEA and UN-umbrella layer. Author attribution and content accuracy confirmed.
