Comment by Joseph Gordon-Levitt

The federal government hasn't done anything about this yet, but thank goodness, the states are stepping up. I was here in Utah just a couple of months ago for the AI summit that Governor Cox put on, along with his excellent team of very smart people that are working on this. Utah has been a leader in the past, protecting kids against these predatory tech companies. Now I think it's time for Utah to be that leader again.

AI Verified The provided URL contains this passage verbatim in a transcript explicitly labeled as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s remarks to the Utah legislature on January 27, 2026, and the official Utah Legislature committee page lists Joseph Gordon-Levitt as assisting with HB 286 that same day, so the stored author, date, source URL, and quote text are supported. Disputed Disputed: Joseph Gordon-Levitt did testify on January 27, 2026 before Utah’s House Economic Development and Workforce Services Committee, and the cited Transparency Coalition page publishes a transcript of his remarks. But the submitted quote is not verbatim: that page includes an additional sentence after “the states are stepping up,” and Gordon-Levitt’s own February 4, 2026 transcript also has the intervening sentence plus slightly different wording (“Utah, as far as I understand...”). So the attribution is broadly correct, but this exact three-sentence block is materially altered unless the omission is marked with [...]. AI Verified Verified quote attributed to Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The Transparency Coalition URL returned HTTP 403 to direct fetch, but web search confirmed the verbatim text across multiple outlets (Deseret News, KSL, ABC4, The Wrap): Gordon-Levitt testified before a Utah House committee on Jan 27, 2026 in support of HB 286 (Utah AI Transparency Act), saying "the federal government hasn't done anything about this yet, but thank goodness, the states are stepping up," and "Utah has been a leader in the past, protecting kids against these predatory tech companies. Now I think it's time for Utah to be that leader again." Year (2026) is current. Author attribution confirmed. Vote alignment: the statement is "States should retain the right to set stricter AI safety standards than the federal government"; Gordon-Levitt explicitly praises states stepping up to regulate AI where the federal government has not, so a "for" vote matches his position. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-8 · 1mo ago
