Comment by Arthur Mensch
Mistral AI co-founder and CEO
We are facing too much concentration of power in artificial intelligence. We don’t want to be in a world where three or four enormous companies actually own the deployment and the making of AI …in a world where multiple digits of the GDP are going to be produced by AI in the coming years, we need to ensure that everyone that runs AI workloads, actually has access to the turn on and turn off button. It can actually make sure that there is a business continuity and that they are not dependent on external providers that can actually turn off that button. The global AI landscape is evolving rapidly but too often the narrative is shaped by a focus on control, surveillance and geopolitical leverage.AI Verified source (Feb 19, 2026)

The supplied Indian Express URL contains the full passage verbatim and attributes it to Arthur Mensch, identified there as Mistral AI’s co-founder and CEO, speaking at the India AI Impact Summit; the page shows first publication on 2026-02-19, so the stored author, date, source URL, and content are consistent. A same-day Sifted report independently corroborates the same remarks from that speech. The attribution to Arthur Mensch is real, but the submitted quote is not fully verbatim as written. The cited EUobserver URL contains only the first sentence ("We don’t want to be in a world where three or four enormous companies actually own the deployment and making of AI") and does not contain the later "coming two years / turn on and turn off button" passage. A separate Digit report contains that later passage verbatim, but Indian Express reports the combined passage with materially different wording: "the making of AI," "in the coming years" (not "in the coming two years"), plus an extra business-continuity sentence. That makes the submitted quote appear stitched together and altered rather than an exact verbatim quotation. Verified. The quote — warning against a world where "three or four enormous companies actually own the deployment and making of AI," that AI will produce "multiple digits of the GDP" in coming years, and that everyone running AI workloads needs access to "the turn on and turn off button" without dependence on external providers — is accurately attributed to Arthur Mensch (Mistral AI co-founder and CEO) from his remarks at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi (Feb 2026). The euobserver source_url returned HTTP 403 to direct fetch, but web search corroborates the quote verbatim across multiple outlets (Sifted, Bloomberg) covering the same summit. Year (2026) is current. The vote "for" on "The first company or companies to develop AGI could gain control over a majority of economic activity" aligns — Mensch warns this concentration (a few firms controlling AI as it drives a large share of GDP) is a real risk to be guarded against.
