Comment by Mark Brakel

Policy director, Future of Life Institute
I think it would be good for the Indian government to do this in partnership with other middle powers. Because I think India alone can't compete with the billions that the corporations in the US and in China are investing. [...] This is where the Indian money gets pooled with the Brazilian money, the South Korean money, the French money. [...] It would be a better strategy for these countries to come together, build an AI model, and utilise them in a sovereign manner to protect their data.

Disputed The cited Dataquest article, published on February 18, 2026, does attribute very similar remarks to Mark Brakel, but the supplied quotation is not an exact verbatim match. In the source, after “investing” there are additional sentences before “This is where...,” and after “the French money” there is another sentence (“Because currently, all countries are trying the same thing...”) before “It would be a better strategy...”. Because the quote as given omits at least one sentence without marking that omission with [...], I cannot confirm it as a verbatim quote. AI Verified Quote substance confirmed via web search of DQIndia coverage. Author Mark Brakel is correctly identified as Future of Life Institute policy director (he is now Global Director of Policy, FLI). The exact phrasing "India alone can't compete with the billions that the corporations in the US and China are investing" is verbatim, and the broader argument about pooling Indian/Brazilian/South Korean/French money to build a sovereign AI model is consistent with the article. The "for" vote on statement 449 (democratic middle powers jointly developing frontier AI) aligns perfectly. Source URL returned 403 but content was independently corroborated.
