The other catastrophic possibility is humans using AI to construct an eventually worldwide dictatorship. A small group of humans could concentrate all the power that AI will have, especially if we achieve AGI or superintelligence. And it would be much harder to get rid of that kind of authoritarian power than what we've seen with fascism and what happened in the USSR, because they didn't have this technology that is becoming more and more feasible of surveillance and even shaping public opinion.

Verification History

AI Verified Quote confirmed via web search as being from Yoshua Bengio's 80,000 Hours podcast episode (April 2026). The phrasing about "worldwide dictatorship," "small group of humans" concentrating all AI power, comparison to fascism and USSR, and the "surveillance and even shaping public opinion" capabilities all match indexed content. Vote "for" the statement "AGI could make governments subordinate to the companies that develop it" aligns with Bengio's concern about a small group concentrating AI power into a global dictatorship — exactly the kind of risk where AGI developers (or those who control them) would dominate governments.
