Should humanity ban autonomous lethal weapons?
Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan strongly disagrees and says:
To the second part of your question, I am strongly in favor of discussions internationally about things like norms. I think with this point, it would be counterproductive to have outright bans on things that people don't even fully understand what they mean when they say, "Ban this." What do you mean by that? Nobody has fully defined. There's a tendency, a proclivity to jump to a killer robot discussion when you talk A.I., and yet if you come and watch what my systems in Project Maven were doing, what we're working in, it's -- it's as far from that spectrum as you could possibly imagine. But it is a -- it is a completely valid conversation we should be having on things like international norms. And those are ongoing. (2019) source Unverified
