Comment by Jonathan E. Pekar
Computational biologist and first author on studies of SARS-CoV-2 molecular epidemiology and zoonotic origins
Understanding the circumstances that lead to pandemics is critical to their prevention. Here, we analyze the pattern and origin of genomic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 early in the COVID-19 pandemic. We show that the SARS-CoV-2 genomic diversity prior to February 2020 comprised only two distinct viral lineages—denoted A and B—with no transitional haplotypes.Disputed (Feb 26, 2022)

The quote is real and appears verbatim on the Zenodo record’s description/abstract, and the record is dated 2022-02-26. However, the source does not attribute those words to Jonathan E. Pekar alone: it lists a multi-author preprint under “Authors/Creators” (Pekar, Magee, Parker, Moshiri, … Wertheim). Under this platform’s rules, a multi-author paper cannot be verified as a single-author quote. ([zenodo.org](https://zenodo.org/records/6291628))
