Comment by James C. Alwine
Virologist and professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania; lead author of a Journal of Virology editorial on SARS-CoV-2 origin hypotheses
Given the currently available evidence, the two plausible possibilities for the origin of SARS-CoV-2 are not equally likely. While acknowledging that we lack access to some key data, the data currently available support the zoonosis hypothesis as the most likely explanation for the origin of SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, if additional information and evidence become available, the conclusions may change. However, for now, the laboratory origin hypothesis remains purely speculative.Disputed (Apr 27, 2023)

Source is the multi-author Journal of Virology editorial 'James C. Alwine et al., A Critical Analysis of the Evidence for the SARS-CoV-2 Origin Hypotheses'; text from that jointly authored paper is not a single-author quote attributable just to James C. Alwine.

Disputed. The source URL does contain one exact sentence from the submission — "Given the currently available evidence, the two plausible possibilities for the origin of SARS-CoV-2 are not equally likely." — but the rest of the submitted text is not verbatim on the page. The article instead says, in nearby sections, that the authors "do not have access to some relevant data," that "the available evidence favors" a zoonotic origin, and that "The best existing scientific evidence supports a direct zoonotic origin"; it does not contain the submitted sentences "While acknowledging that we lack access to some key data..." or "the laboratory origin hypothesis remains purely speculative." The Journal of Virology page also lists five individual authors (James C. Alwine, Arturo Casadevall, Lynn W. Enquist, Felicia D. Goodrum, and Michael J. Imperiale), so this platform cannot verify it as a single-author James C. Alwine quote.
