Comment by John Purdy
Virologist and coauthor of an ASM commentary on SARS-CoV-2 origins and lab-leak claims
Animals slaughtered and sold in wet markets are a clear threat for zoonotic virus transmission to humans. Globally, policymakers have done little to curtail or effectively regulate the illegal wildlife trade and wet market practices. As well as the clear risk of future spillover events, these economic practices also undermine health security, destabilize habitats and communities, and fuel the spread of infectious diseases more generally.Disputed (Aug 1, 2024)

Primary source is the 41-author Journal of Virology commentary by Alwine et al.; this is commentary prose, not a statement attributable to John Purdy alone. Multi-author journal-article text is not a verifiable single-author quote.

The quote is real and appears verbatim on the DOI page for the article at lines 257-259; the page also shows it was published online on 2024-08-01. But it is not attributable to John Purdy alone: the source is a multi-author journal commentary listing 41 authors, with John Purdy named only as one coauthor and contributor (“Writing – review and editing”). Because this platform cannot verify a many-author article as a single-author quote, the stored attribution is disputed. ([journals.asm.org](https://journals.asm.org/doi/full/10.1128/jvi.01240-24))
