There’s also a lot of hype, that AI will create evil robots with super-intelligence. That’s an unnecessary distraction.
Those of us on the frontline shipping code, we’re excited by AI, but we don’t see a realistic path for our software to become sentient.
There's a big difference between intelligence and sentience. There could be a race of killer robots in the far future, but I don’t work on not turning AI evil today for the same reason I don't worry about the problem of overpopulation on the planet Mars.

Source URL (theregister.com) returns HTTP 403 to WebFetch, blocking direct verification. However, web search confirms the quote is widely attributed to Andrew Ng from his March 2015 GTC talk in San Jose (also corroborated by Quote Investigator). The vote alignment (against "AGI could quickly lead to superintelligence") is consistent with Ng's stated position. Tried to find a recent 2025/2026 replacement quote — Ng's position remains similar (he called AGI "overhyped" at Y Combinator in 2025) — but news sources (Fortune, NBC, Yahoo, TheStreet, Fast Company) also block WebFetch, so I couldn't grab a verbatim sourced quote to substitute.
