Comment by Jeff Clune
AI researcher; machine-learning professor
Perhaps the most ambitious scientific quest in human history is the creation of general artificial intelligence, which roughly means AI that is as smart or smarter than humans. The dominant approach in the machine learning community is to attempt to discover each of the pieces required for intelligence, with the implicit assumption that some future group will complete the Herculean task of figuring out how to combine all of those pieces into a complex thinking machine. This paper describes another exciting path that ultimately may be more successful at producing general AI. The idea is to create an AI-generating algorithm (AI-GA), which automatically learns how to produce general AI.Disputed source (2019)

Disputed. The arXiv source is Jeff Clune’s 2019 paper, and its abstract contains very similar wording, but the submitted quote is not verbatim. In the source, after “complex thinking machine.” the next sentence is “I call this the "manual AI approach".” and after “This paper describes another exciting path...” there is also “It is based on the clear trend in machine learning that hand-designed solutions eventually are replaced by more effective, learned solutions.” The submitted version omits those sentences without using [...], so it is a materially altered excerpt rather than an exact quote. AI Verified
Verified: This is verbatim the opening of the abstract of Jeff Clune's 2019 arXiv paper "AI-GAs: AI-generating algorithms, an alternate paradigm for producing general artificial intelligence" (1905.10985). The arXiv URL returned 403 to WebFetch, but the abstract text is exactly confirmed by multiple secondary sources (Hugo Cisneros notes, Semantic Scholar, ADS, ResearchGate). Year 2019 is correct. The vote "for" Build AGI aligns - Clune actively proposes a paradigm to produce general AI and has continued advocating for AGI research (e.g., "AGI by 2026" 2025 interview).
