Should humanity ban the development of superintelligence until there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably and strong public buy-in?
Ben Goertzel strongly disagrees and says:
I don’t think Nick Bostrom or anyone else is going to stop the human race from developing advanced AI because it’s a source of tremendous intellectual curiosity but also of tremendous economic advantage. So if let’s say President Trump decided to ban artificial intelligence research – I don’t think he’s going to but suppose he did. China will keep doing artificial intelligence research. If U.S. and China ban it, you know, Africa will do it. Everywhere around the world has AI textbooks and computers. And everyone now knows you can make people’s lives better and make money from developing more advanced AI. So there’s no possibility in practice to halt AI development. What we can do is try to direct it in the most beneficial direction according to our best judgment. source Unverified -
Should humanity build artificial general intelligence?
Ben Goertzel agrees and says:
Like, right, right now, if I’m in a really good mood, I take everything blissfully and calmly. If I’m in a bad mood and someone points out something I did that was wrong or stupid, like there’s some anger that rises up inside me, I’m like, “f*** you. Why are you saying that?” I mean, I just tamp that down and let that like flow pass before it takes of me because I’m 56 years old, I’m not five years old, right? But, but we all, we all have that, right? I mean, we evolve with that. You don’t have to program that into the AI, right? We, we should not do so. Now we could, if you want to build military robots and if you’re building like a corporate sales AI, you may build into it that his motivation is “haha I figured out how to extract all this guy’s money by selling him crap he doesn’t need.” I mean, you could build AI with that motivation, but we don’t have to, we could build an AGI with a motivational system to like do, do what the average person would think is the most beneficial, loving, and compassionate thing in this situation. source Unverified
