Disputed The Science Media Centre page dated 2023-05-30 does contain this exact sentence and attributes it to Prof George Gao, and a mirror of the BBC article reproduces the same wording. But Gao later told China Daily that the BBC had taken his words out of context from a late-2022 online discussion, and he gave a fuller version that added: “But every possibility requires evidence, and there is no evidence of a lab leak.” Because the stored quote omits that qualifying clause and the speaker contested the BBC framing/attribution, this is better treated as disputed than as a clean authentic stand-alone quote.
