1. It's hard to know how to make AI go well. 2. I have respect for the technology that we are all working on, and our attitude should be one of seriousness and curiosity rather than dismissal and cynicism. 3. From here onward, there is no risk-free path towards the future. Whatever path we choose involves trade-offs and uncertainties. 4. If there's a coordinated slowdown, it is possible for rapid power assymetries to develop. If there is no coordinated slowdown, coordination is left to market competition and realpolitik, and there are no guarantees that automatically goes well. Neither pinky promises nor oneupmanship are the strongest coordination mechanism. 5. Nonetheless, conscious efforts to coordinate are worth attempting, and have worked in important moments. 6. Although I'm not even remotely in the business of building singular godmodels and I am not familiar with the current capabilities at the frontier of scaling, I believe this letter is a welcome step in establishing common goodwill among otherwise competing actors. 7. Therefore, I've signed this statement.
