The tax base would erode only if labor’s share of income fell dramatically and persistently over many years. That scenario is highly unlikely because workers displaced by AI are unlikely to permanently disappear from the labor market. Instead, most will transition into new occupations and industries, just as workers have during previous waves of technological change.
