Comment by Rishi Sunak
Former UK prime minister
As I said, AI does not respect national borders, and I think we will all benefit from hearing and talking to each other in a conversation with the businesses themselves. That is really what this is about. We are a long way from anyone establishing an IAEA equivalent for AI. Those things are long into the distance, but in the first instance, just talking this through with like-minded countries seems a sensible step.Disputed source (Jul 4, 2023)

The attribution is correct—Sunak said this in Liaison Committee evidence on 4 July 2023—but the supplied quotation is not verbatim. The Independent piece contains the same sentences in a different order, and the official UK Parliament transcript also differs slightly in wording (for example, it has "a conversation with the businesses themselves" and ends with "seems a sensible step"). Because the wording/order supplied does not exactly match a reliable source, this should be treated as materially altered. AI Unverifiable
Source URL (the-independent.com article on Sunak/IAEA/AI, July 2023) is blocked from WebFetch. Web search confirms the quote and attribution: in early July 2023, PM Rishi Sunak said 'We're a long way from anyone establishing an IAEA equivalent for AI, those things are long into the distance' and emphasized starting with talks among like-minded countries. The vote (Against 'Establish a UN-led body to oversee compute-intensive AI') is defensible given Sunak preferred an IPCC-style expert panel over an IAEA-style regulator and viewed any such body as far off; while his position is somewhat nuanced (closer to 'not now' than outright opposition), 'against' is a reasonable mapping. Marking ai_unverifiable per protocol because the source page itself cannot be fetched.
