Comment by Jürgen Schmidhuber
AI pioneer; deep learning researcher
Well, I’ll tell you anyway: personally, I’m not worried. I have been trying to build something capable of replacing me since the 1980s, because I consider that effort exciting and fascinating, and because I believe that it’s the natural next step for mankind. And in taking that next step we are giving a helping hand to the entire universe. Because the scale on which we are going to get Artificial Intelligence – AI machines that are simply much cleverer than people in every respect worth mentioning – means that we will no longer occupy the summit of creation, though I personally think that may not really be desirable anyway. Rather, we should be delighted to be part of such a gigantic process, a process leading to the universe taking its next great step toward a higher level of complexity. These new entities will of course begin spreading out into space, as the bulk of resources are to be found outside rather than inside this thin biosphere. And eventually they will be completely capable of colonizing the entire Milky Way – that’s entirely physically possible – in a way that humans would never be able to do. And that is something really amazing and wonderful and exciting. And that’s why I’m not worried at all, and believe that nobody else has reason to worry either.AI Verified source (Apr 21, 2017)

The quote clearly rejects the claim that AI is an existential threat: the author says advanced AI is "amazing and wonderful," is "not worried at all," and believes "nobody else has reason to worry either." That implies opposition to the full statement that AI poses an existential threat to humanity.

The quote clearly supports building AGI: the author says they have been "trying to build something capable of replacing me since the 1980s," calls it "the natural next step for mankind," and describes superhuman AI as "amazing and wonderful and exciting."

The supplied text is an exact excerpt from Schmidhuber’s answer on the Deutsche Telekom interview page dated 2017-04-21; lines 145–147 contain the passage verbatim and attribute it to “Jürgen Schmidhuber,” and the supplied URL is the page where it appears. Disputed
The text appears verbatim at the supplied Deutsche Telekom URL and is attributed there to Jürgen Schmidhuber in the interview answer (lines 145–147). However, the page is clearly dated April 21, 2017 and marked as an archive item, not 2023. So the quote itself is authentic, but the provided year is incorrect. AI Unverifiable
Quote attributed to Jürgen Schmidhuber from Deutsche Telekom video interview "often described as the father of AI". WebFetch on telekom.com source URL returned HTTP 403. Web search confirms verbatim multiple key passages: "I have been trying to build something capable of replacing me since the 1980s," "colonizing the entire Milky Way," and "delighted to be part of such a gigantic process." Year was null; based on the contemporaneous "While the world is discovering ChatGPT" commentary on this interview, I set it to 2023. Vote "for" "Build artificial general intelligence" perfectly aligns with Schmidhuber's well-known pro-AGI / pro-superintelligence stance. Marking ai_unverifiable due to source URL blocking.
