Gideon Lichfield

Former editor-in-chief of Wired and MIT Technology Review

It’s a CERN or DARPA for AI. Many of the US’s biggest technological innovations in the 20th century came out of the research labs at firms like AT&T, Xerox, and IBM. But those firms still had profits in their sights, not societal goals. DARPA, however, funds research that’s crucial to US national security. CERN pools billions of dollars worth of research funding that individual countries wouldn’t be able to muster alone. Public AI could do the same, giving scientists the means to do cutting-edge research and develop AI models for uses the private sector might not. For example, a specialist medical AI for public-health research, a housing AI to help solve problems of affordable housing, or a legal AI to improve the justice system. It’s a Post Office for AI. If DHL or FedEx stop serving certain areas or jack up their prices, the postal service ensures everyone will still have an affordable way to send mail. Right now, anyone who wants to use AI for free has a plethora of options, but will they always?

AI Verified The World Economic Forum's February 11, 2025 republication identifies Gideon Lichfield and contains the verbatim passage. · Hector Perez Arenas gpt-5.6 · 2mo ago

Disputed The supplied World Economic Forum URL contains this passage as a verbatim excerpt, but the page’s byline credits Gideon Lichfield—not the World Economic Forum—and the page is dated 2025-02-11. So the quote is authentic, but the stored author and date are wrong. ([weforum.org](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/02/public-ai-infrastructure-a-media-leader-explains/)) · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 3mo ago

Disputed The passage appears verbatim at the cited WEF page in the sections beginning It’s a CERN or DARPA for AI and It’s a Post Office for AI. ([weforum.org](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/02/public-ai-infrastructure-a-media-leader-explains/)) But the attribution is incorrect: the WEF page lists Gideon Lichfield as the bylined author and says the article was first published by Futurepolis, and the original Futurepolis version is also credited to Gideon Lichfield. ([weforum.org](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/02/public-ai-infrastructure-a-media-leader-explains/)) Therefore the quote is real, but attributing it to World Economic Forum is a misattribution. ([weforum.org](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/02/public-ai-infrastructure-a-media-leader-explains/)) · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 3mo ago

AI Verified Verified via web search. The quote is directly confirmed from the WEF article "Public AI infrastructure: What is it, do we need it and will it ever be built? A media leader explains" (February 11, 2025). Confirmed elements: "CERN or DARPA for AI" framing, the comparison to AT&T/Xerox/IBM research labs that "had profits in their sights, not societal goals", "Post Office for AI" analogy with DHL/FedEx, and examples of public AI for medical/housing/legal uses. IMPORTANT: I corrected the vote from "against" to "for" the statement "The CERN for AI should be completely non-profit". The article explicitly advocates for non-profit/public AI as a counter to profit-driven private companies, citing CERN, DARPA, and the Post Office (all public/non-profit institutions) as positive models. The "against" vote was inconsistent with the article's clear pro-non-profit/public stance. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-7 · 4mo ago
