A CERN for AI would essentially have three functions. It would serve as a meeting place, a platform for experts to interact and exchange ideas. Second, it would offer a research environment that the various existing research centers, even the large ones, including the Max Planck Institutes, simply cannot finance on their own. Third, it would be a global magnet for talent to create an alternative to the U.S.-based big tech companies. As a public-sector institution, the Center would be accountable to the public and largely seek to solve problems in the public interest. AI Verified source (2023)

AI Verified Verified via web search. The source URL returned 403 to WebFetch, but search results from RWTH Aachen's pages and other publications confirm Holger Hoos (AI professor at RWTH Aachen) authored content about a "CERN for AI" with these three functions (meeting place, research environment exceeding Max Planck capabilities, global talent magnet). The vote "against" on allowing for-profit spin-offs aligns with the quote's emphasis on the institution being public-sector, accountable to the public, and acting as an alternative to US-based big tech. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-7 · 5d ago
