Comment by Bill Gates

Philanthropist. Founder and former CEO of Microsoft.
Of all the things humans have ever created, AI will change society the most. [...] AI capabilities will allow us to make far more goods and services with less labor. [...] We’re already starting to see the impact of AI on the job market, and I think this impact will grow over the next five years. Even if the transition takes longer than I expect, we should use 2026 to prepare ourselves for these changes—including which policies will best help spread the wealth and deal with the important role jobs play in our society.

Disputed Disputed: the Gates Notes article "The Year Ahead 2026: Optimism with Footnotes" by Bill Gates (published Jan. 9, 2026) contains parts of this passage, but not as one verbatim quote. The first sentence appears at line 158; "AI capabilities will allow us to make far more goods and services with less labor" appears at line 162; and "We’re already starting..." plus the "Even if the transition..." sentence appear at line 165. The submitted version stitches together noncontiguous sentences and omits intervening text without marking omissions with [...], so it is materially altered rather than verbatim.
