At various times in history (such as the Gilded Age in the United States or the East India Company in the UK), companies have become powerful enough that they capture the state or adopt quasi-state characteristics. AI will soon become so capable that I worry it cannot safely be fully entrusted to either governments or companies, and there must be checks and balances on each.
