Banning advances in artificial intelligence would be a profound mistake. More capable AI systems could accelerate medical breakthroughs, advance scientific research, improve productivity, and lower costs for American families. With policymakers focused on affordability, banning one of the most promising technologies for achieving just that makes no sense. Advanced AI presents real questions that policymakers should continue to take seriously, but its benefits are already tangible, while many of the most dire risks remain speculative. Safety research, testing, and security work should proceed alongside the development of increasingly capable AI. The federal government and AI developers are already devoting substantial resources to these efforts, and Congress should continue strengthening them. A sweeping ban on future advances would sacrifice much of that promise based largely on predictions about what AI might become.
