Thomas Piketty

French economist and professor

Let’s say it straight away: these proposals are complementary and not substitutable. In the long run, they must all be implemented, in stages and in this order.

Disputed Disputed: the quoted wording is not on the supplied Basic Income Today page, which is dated May 21, 2021, not 2025. That page instead says the proposals are “complementary and not substitutable” and that “Basic income is an essential but insufficient tool.” The exact opening sentences “Universal Basic Income is part of ideal, just societies. But I think it is not a magic bullet.” appear in a different 2019-12-16 article/interview in The Corner, while the later idea about combining basic income, a job guarantee, and inheritance for all appears in Piketty’s 2021 post and a later INET transcript. So the stored quote is a composite/materially altered quotation with the wrong source and date, not a single verbatim quote from the supplied URL. Disputed Disputed. I did not find the prompt’s wording verbatim in the cited Basic Income Today page. That page, dated May 21, 2021, instead reproduces Piketty’s May 18, 2021 article saying basic income, a job guarantee, and inheritance for all are “complementary and not substitutable” and “must all be implemented,” not the exact sentence in the prompt. ([basicincometoday.com](https://basicincometoday.com/piketty-basic-income-a-job-guarantee-and-inheritance-for-all-must-all-be-implemented/)) A different source, The Corner (Dec. 16, 2019), does contain the opening lines “Universal Basic Income is part of ideal, just societies. But I think it is not a magic bullet,” but it continues with different wording about targeted minimum income rather than the prompt’s final sentence. ([thecorner.eu](https://thecorner.eu/news-the-world/world-economy/piketty-we-are-reinforcing-social-inequality-with-public-money/83109/)) In a later INET interview, Piketty again says basic income is not “the magic bullet” and that it should come with a job guarantee and inheritance for all, but again not in the prompt’s exact wording. ([ineteconomics.org](https://www.ineteconomics.org/perspectives/podcasts/quality-of-life-for-billions-of-people-is-at-stake)) So this appears to be a stitched/paraphrased composite, not a real verbatim Piketty quote; the claimed year 2025 is also unsupported by the sources I found. · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 3mo ago
