Many proposals for a slowdown or pause concentrate power — they centralize control of AI into a few hands and leave us worse off. I think we can do better. I’m signing because I believe we may need mechanisms to coordinate AI progress in the future, and inventing it in a crisis is a sure way to get a bad mechanism. We have to tread a path through a narrow corridor if we want to build coordination mechanisms that don’t let one actor own the future, and the earlier we can get to work on that the better.
