I'm signing because I want the U.S. to be at the table in this international effort, with a strong voice for our values, personal freedom included. AI has the potential to bring humanity to new heights, and I want to do what I can to use it to make all of our lives better. But we have to be acutely and accurately aware of the risks, and we can only fully realize that promise if we build the ability to verify the safety of these systems and understand the true consequences of our actions. I'm unsure what the right approach looks like, or whether automating AI research is the only capability that deserves this kind of attention. My hope is that whatever comes of this stays limited in scope rather than growing into something expansive or excessive. Still, the capabilities of this kind of AI should be taken seriously, and they warrant measured action. I sign in my personal capacity; these views are my own and not my employer's.
