Comment by Dario Amodei

I am very concerned about deploying such systems without a better handle on interpretability. These systems will be absolutely central to the economy, technology, and national security, and will be capable of so much autonomy that I consider it basically unacceptable for humanity to be totally ignorant of how they work.

AI Verified The quote clearly supports the idea that highly capable, autonomous AI should not be deployed without interpretability: the author says it is "basically unacceptable" to be ignorant of how such systems work. While it does not explicitly mention a legal requirement or a formal capability threshold, it strongly implies support for requiring sufficiently powerful systems to be interpretable. · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 18d ago

AI Unverifiable The quote strongly favors more interpretability for powerful systems ("basically unacceptable" to be "totally ignorant of how they work"), but it does not explicitly say they should be formally "required" above a defined capability threshold. · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 18d ago
