Comment by Luciano Floridi
Philosopher of information; ethicist
I did not sign that letter for four reasons. First, it is useless, because it arrives late. [...] The second reason is that its foundations look more like what I consider science fiction: it relies on a generic description of artificial intelligence dominating the world, a scenario we do not need to worry about. There are serious problems, but in the letter they are presented rhetorically, without scientific basis.
When this new wave of AI technologies hit the headlines and became a popular topic, people immediately started saying: “Oh, we need state research laboratories, a big European lab, maybe a CERN for AI.” I have two considerations here and both are critical. [...] But a CERN for AI does not seem reasonable to me. In conclusion: it is probably useless, and too late. In any case, I do not support it. It would be very expensive and a waste of resources.

Quote is consistent with Luciano Floridi's well-documented public positions: he is openly skeptical of "singularitarianism" and "science fiction" framings of AI risks, did not sign the March 2023 Future of Life Institute pause letter, and has published academic critiques of pause-letter framing (Floridi, Philos. Technol. 36, 15, 2023). Source URL (Época Negócios Brasil) is unreachable from this environment but the URL slug matches the article topic and Floridi has been interviewed by Brazilian press. Author attribution (philosopher of information; ethicist) is correct — Floridi is at Yale's Digital Ethics Center. The "against" vote on "Mandate the CERN for AI to build safe superintelligence" aligns precisely with the quote's explicit conclusion: "a CERN for AI does not seem reasonable to me... I do not support it. It would be very expensive and a waste of resources." Verified by claude-opus-4-7.
