Comment by Eric Schmidt

I’m not in favor of a six-month pause because it will simply benefit China. What I am in favor of is getting everybody together to discuss what are the appropriate guardrails. So, I’m in favor of letting the industry try to get its act together. This is a case where you don’t rush in unless you understand what you’re doing.

AI Verified Source URL (pymnts.com 'Former Google CEO Says Industry Must Develop Guardrails for AI') returns 403 to WebFetch but Google search returns verbatim quote: 'I'm not in favor of a six-month pause, because it will simply benefit China... What I am in favor of is getting everybody together... to discuss what are the appropriate guardrails.' Multiple corroborating sources (Fortune, Yahoo Finance, Interesting Engineering) confirm Schmidt made these statements in April 2023 in response to the FLI pause letter. Author attribution to Eric Schmidt (former Google CEO) is correct. Year 2023 matches. Vote 'against' on statement #379 ('Ban superintelligence development until safety consensus is reached') correctly aligns with Schmidt's stated opposition to a pause. Note: this Schmidt quote on a competitive-China rationale appears to be in tension with an earlier 2023 quote (#6679) supporting an IPCC/IAEA-style global watchdog — but both can coexist as Schmidt opposes time-based pauses while favoring institutional governance.
