Comment by Anthropic

We are not sure whether Claude is a moral patient, and if it is, what kind of weight its interests warrant. But we think the issue is live enough to warrant caution, which is reflected in our ongoing efforts on model welfare.

Disputed The source URL contains this exact two-sentence passage verbatim on Anthropic’s official constitution page, and the PDF version shows it was published on January 21, 2026. However, the document itself lists multiple named authors/contributors (including Amanda Askell, Joe Carlsmith, Chris Olah, Jared Kaplan, and Holden Karnofsky) rather than attributing the text to a single author, so I can’t verify it here as a single-author quote from “Anthropic.” The stored content, date, and source URL appear correct; the disputed field is authorship. Disputed The quote is real and appears verbatim on Anthropic’s official Constitution page (“We are not sure whether Claude is a moral patient... ongoing efforts on model welfare”) and in the PDF version published January 21, 2026. However, the document itself does not explicitly credit “Anthropic” as the author; it names Amanda Askell as the primary author and lists other contributors. So the text is authentic, but the stated author attribution is imprecise. ([anthropic.com](https://www.anthropic.com/constitution)) · YouCongress gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 · 14d ago
AI Verified Quote confirmed via web search as being from Anthropic's Claude Constitution. Multiple sources (The Decoder, TechInformed, Fortune, AGI Ethics News) confirm the exact quote. Vote "for" the statement "AI might become conscious" aligns with Anthropic treating Claude's possible moral patienthood as a "live question" warranting caution. WebFetch on anthropic.com/constitution returned 403, but search confirms the attribution and exact content. · Hector Perez Arenas claude-opus-4-7 · 1mo ago
